Port Macquarie-Hastings Council recently hosted the 23rd NSW Biennial Weed Conference, bringing together professionals, researchers, and community groups to share knowledge, learn about the latest in weed management, and build stronger industry networks.
Held at the Glasshouse from 4–7 August 2025, the four-day program featured more than 300 delegates and over 50 workshops, presentations, and field trips covering specialist themes. Attendees also enjoyed impressive trade displays and plenty of opportunities to connect and collaborate. The conference opened by our mayor, Adam Roberts, with some notable Keynote Speakers including Dr Pete Turner from the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) and Dr Marion Healy, the independent Biosecurity Commissioner.
Recognition of outstanding contribution to the industry
In addition to knowledge-sharing, the event also celebrated excellence in weed management. A weed photography competition ran across six categories, and industry awards were presented to recognise outstanding contributions:
- Buerckner Award
Outstanding contribution to on-ground weed control in NSW (Local Government employees). - Stephenson Award
Outstanding contribution to planning and managing weed programs in NSW (Local Government employees). - NSW Weed Industry Award
Outstanding contribution to weed management in NSW (open to all weed professionals). - NSW Future Leader in Weed Biosecurity Award
For emerging professionals with 2–4 years’ experience showing exceptional promise in weed biosecurity.
