This month, a heartfelt rescue effort united FAWNA NSW Inc wildlife rescuers and local community members to save a threatened Grey Headed Flying-Fox in distress in Wauchope.
The Grey-Headed flying fox had become entangled in the fronds of a cocos palm (Syagrus romanzoffiana) (a common invasive garden weed in Australia), hanging precariously at a height of 15 meters for up to three days, according to the homeowners.
Responding swiftly to a call for help, FAWNA wildlife rescuers contacted an arborist business, which generously offered their assistance free of charge. With the help of a boom lift, the FAWNA member safely retrieved the flying-fox. Once on the ground, the rescuer carefully untangled the animal and provided critical hydration.
The rescued flying-fox is in care with another FAWNA member in a specially designed flying-fox flight cage while an injury to a wing membrane heals, to soon be released back into the wild.
This rescue showcases the amazing community spirit in our region. Thanks to the FAWNA rescuers, the support of a generous arborist business, and the compassion of local residents, this flying fox is now safe and sound.
