Native Plant of the Month: Bauerella

Bauerella (Sarcomelicope simplicifolia) is an attractive small to medium-sized tree growing in coastal and foothill rainforest areas

Although, not well known in cultivation, Bauerella is found locally. It is very common in Sea Acres National Park and in Council’s Calwalla and Lighthouse Beach Rainforest Reserves.

Popular with native birds

Bauerella, (also known as Yellow Wood or Aspen Yellow) has a dense crown of glossy dark green leaves and a noticeable feature is the whitish leaf stems (petioles), which can be up to 5cm long. The leaves have a citrus smell when crushed. Small cream flowers are followed by whitish to yellow-brown slightly fleshy fruit which are eaten by the Green Catbird and White-headed Pigeon. It seems to have a long fruiting period.

Currently this species is not available at the Port Macquarie Landcare Nursery but would be suitable as a street tree and for larger yards as well as rainforest regeneration projects near to the coast.
