Bleeding Heart is an attractive small bushy shrub or occasionally a tree, 3-5m high. The trunk is pale grey to brown in colour and smooth. The plant can live for up to 20 years and will grow in full sun or part shade and is a useful revegetation plant.
Where is it found?
Bleeding Heart is also known as Homalanthus populifolius and is found in wet eucalypt forest and on rainforest edges. Its distribution is along the Central coast and ranges of NSW extending from the NSW-Victorian border to far North Queensland.
Description
Young trees can have large 20cm heart-shaped leaves and a few bright red dying leaves are often present. It has small yellow-green flowers in spikes and in summer, birds flock to eat the purple fruits. It is fast growing and fairly short-lived, but responds well to pruning, which may extend its life. It is generally available from the Landcare Nursery.
