Bower Vine (Pandorea jasminoides)
Bower Vine is an often underrated yet highly versatile Australian climber, valued for its long flowering season and lush, evergreen foliage. From spring through to autumn, this attractive scrambler becomes smothered in soft pink, trumpet‑shaped flowers with a deep red throat, creating a colourful display that suits a wide range of garden settings.
The glossy, dark green leaves provide year‑round interest, while the flowers attract a variety of insects. After flowering, the plant produces oblong capsules around 4–6 centimetres long, each containing distinctive winged seeds.
Bower vine grows naturally in subtropical, littoral and dry rainforest, extending north from the Hastings River. It grows best in full sun to part shade in well‑drained soil. Once established, it is hardy and tolerant of salt‑laden coastal winds, making it a reliable choice for gardens in the Port Macquarie‑Hastings region. It is well suited to use on fences, trellises and arbours. Regular pruning helps keep the vine compact and encourages fresh growth and flowering.
