One of our showiest native plants, Climbing Guinea Flower (Hibbertia scandens) is widespread in a variety of habitats in coastal NSW.
Climbing Guinea Flower is a hardy, vigorous scrambler and can grow to between 2-5 metres in length. It has glossy leaves and large bright yellow flowers. The yellow buttercup style flowers are about 5-7cm across and occur throughout the year but are most commonly seen in late Spring and Summer. The individual flowers usually last only a day or two but new flowers are produced over a long period.
A hardy coastal native
The climbing guinea flower is typically found along the coast spanning southeastern NSW through to northeast Queensland. This shrub can tolerate a broad range of climates and will handle exposure to salt laden wind. It flowers best when in full sun however will also grow well in part shade. Preferring well-drained soil, it can also handle mild frost. It is advisable to prune to maintain shape after flowering. It is useful for coastal gardens and dry conditions and is very suitable for growing on trellises or fences.
