PMHC answers the call of its new Environmental Sustainability Strategy to "lead by example" with new initiatives to tackle plastic waste.
In March 2025, PMHC adopted a new Environmental Sustainability Strategy, which sets a clear direction for how we’ll protect our natural environment as the region grows. The strategy ensures we manage our resources—like land, energy, water and waste—sustainably, and prepare for natural hazards and environmental change.
A key focus area is for Council to “lead by example.” In the spirit of Plastic Free July, we’ve introduced two new initiatives that directly reduce plastic waste:
Reuseable Tumblers at the Glasshouse
Some events at the Glasshouse aren’t suited to glassware, which previously meant relying on a variety of single-use plastic cups for drinks. Now, all drinks at these events are served in durable, reusable tumblers featuring the message: “Don’t Toss or Take – Please Return.”
This simple switch is already cutting down plastic waste generated at these events, supporting our commitment to more sustainable operations.
Recycling Old Uniforms with UPPAREL
Council’s main office and depot now recycle old staff uniforms, safety helmets, and steel-cap boots through UPPAREL. These items often contain plastics and synthetic materials that can leach chemicals and dyes into the environment if sent to landfill.
UPPAREL helps close the loop on textile waste by donating wearable items to charities and recycling unwearable garments into fibre used for packaging, insulation, signage and more.

To further reduce textile waste, staff at Council’s Port Macquarie office can now donate clean, unwanted uniforms to a central reuse station. Items are made available for other staff to take as needed—giving uniforms a second life and helping reduce demand for new clothing.
