Each July, millions of people around the world take part in Plastic Free July, choosing simple ways to reduce single-use plastic in their everyday lives.
This year, the campaign begins with a shared global moment. On 1 July, communities around the world will be invited to take the Plastic Free July pledge and help set a new world record for the most people pledging to refuse single-use plastic in one day.
The best part? Your pledge does not need to be big or perfect. It just needs to be practical.
You might choose to avoid single-use coffee cups, say no to plastic bags, swap disposable drink bottles for a reusable bottle, or stop using cling wrap at home.
Starting with one small change can make it easier to build new habits over time. Many people find that once they make one swap, they start noticing other simple ways to reduce waste too.
Choose a pledge that works for you
Before July begins, take a moment to think about where single-use plastics show up most often in your day.
Do you often buy takeaway coffee? Do you forget your reusable bags? Do you use cling wrap for school lunches or leftovers? Do you buy bottled water when you are out and about?
Your pledge is more likely to stick if it fits your real routine. Choose one single-use plastic item you are ready to avoid, then make a simple plan to help yourself succeed.
Make your pledge easier
A little preparation now can make a big difference once July begins. Think about what might get in the way of your pledge, then set yourself up to make the new habit easier.
Try preparing a few simple swaps before 1 July:

Keep a reusable cup in your car, work bag or near your keys.

Choose a reusable drink bottle you enjoy using and take it with you each day.

Make or buy reusable wraps, containers or bowl covers before you run out of cling wrap.

Put reusable shopping bags back in your car or by the front door as soon as you unpack your groceries.

Keep a clean container in your bag or car for takeaway meals or leftovers.
These small steps help remove the barriers that can make new habits harder to keep.
Be part of something bigger
Plastic Free July is not about doing everything at once. It is about choosing one action, giving it a go, and seeing where it leads.
By taking the pledge on 1 July, you will be joining people across our community and around the world who are making simple, practical changes to reduce single-use plastic. Every small change made across the Port Macquarie Hastings region adds up, especially when households, workplaces and schools all take part.
Ready to get involved? Choose your pledge now, make your plan, and join the Plastic Free July pledge on 1 July. One small change can help reduce single-use plastic and build habits that last well beyond the month.
