Council’s Environmental Health Officers have made a simple switch that’s delivering big benefits for both the environment and the budget.
For many years here in the Port Macquarie Hastings region, single-use D-sized batteries were used to power mosquito surveillance traps that help protect our community from mosquito-borne diseases. These batteries needed to be replaced regularly, creating waste and ongoing costs.
Local trial shows postive gain
In 2022, Council’s Sustainability and Health & Building teams trialled rechargeable batteries, sourcing them from local stores. More than a year later, those same batteries are still in use. Some are only now showing signs of requiring replacement. One set of four rechargeable batteries has replaced up to 108 single-use batteries — saving around $280 per set.
The switch to rechargeables has reduced battery waste and the resources needed to produce, transport, and safely dispose of single-use batteries.

Can you make the switch?
It’s a small switch many households and workplaces can make to help reduce waste.
Rechargeable batteries are now more affordable and widely available, and they’re a smart way to save money while reducing waste.
Remember, batteries should never go in your kerbside bins. Instead, use the free drop-off points at local stores, Council facilities, or waste transfer stations.
