This World Environment Day, observed on 5 June, the global community unites under the theme #BeatPlasticPollution, focusing on ending plastic pollution
Hosted by the Republic of Korea, this year’s international campaign emphasises the urgent need to address the pervasive issue of plastic waste that affects our environment and health.
Plastic pollution has infiltrated every corner of our planet, from the deepest oceans to the highest mountains, and even into our bodies through microplastics. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) highlights that while plastic pollution is a significant concern, it is also one of the most solvable environmental challenges we face today
Local Actions Making a Difference

We can all play a part in protecting our beaches, waterways, and marine ecosystems by taking simple actions in our daily lives. Take 3 for the Sea - a simple habit that makes a difference
Organisations like ‘Take 3 for the Sea’ inspires participation with simple actions that reduce the impacts of plastic pollution and waste in the ocean and broader environment.
AUSMAP - join a national citizen science project
Local community groups have joined AUSMAP, a national citizen science network, collecting data to help map pollution hotpots with the aim of saving our river systems and coastlines. Join a local hub here in Port Macquarie.
Plastic Free July - commit to one new change
As members of the Plastic Free Foundation, Council supports the annual Plastic Free July campaign each year. This global movement encourages millions of people be part of the solution to plastic pollution and invites us all to pledge to make one new change to our habits to reduce single use plastic. Council’s education team will be out and about in July to promote the pledge and encourage the reducation of single-use plastics.
