What Is a Tool Library?
A tool library works much like a traditional library but instead of books, members borrow tools. From hand tools and gardening equipment to power tools and DIY essentials, tool libraries give people access to the right tool at the right time, without the cost, clutter or storage challenges of ownership.
Recently set up in Port Macquarie and Wauchope, these community‑based libraries support residents with home maintenance, repairs, gardening projects and creative builds, all while encouraging sharing and reuse.
How Do the Tool Libraries Work?
Residents can become members by signing up and paying a small annual membership fee. Once registered, members can browse an online catalogue of available tools, reserve items, then collect them from their local tool library.
Tools are borrowed for a set period and returned after use so others in the community can benefit. Clear borrowing guidelines and safety information help ensure tools are well cared for and remain available for long‑term community use.
