National Recycling Week
11 - 17th November, 2024
This National Recycling Week we are asking our community to become Everyday Recycling Heroes
So, what does it take to become an everyday recycling hero?
Firstly, get your yellow bin right! That means putting the right things in your yellow bin, keeping it to what we can accept at our local waste facility to avoid contamination. Also ensure items are loose and clean!
Next step, think beyond the yellow bin. Look for opportunities to recycle items that can’t go in the yellow bin by accessing local and national programs that can help divert these into suitable recycling streams.
Finally, purchase items made from recycled material. By purchasing recycled products we ensure that there is a market for our recyclables and less reliance on virgin materials.
We’ll be out and about in the community throughout November with a range of free events to help you become an Everyday Recycling Hero!

How will you become an Everyday Recycling Hero?
This National Recycling Week, we’re encouraging you to pledge a recycling habit you can start to become an everyday recycling hero. Here are some ideas:
Follow our A-Z guide of what goes in which bin to ensure only the right waste goes in the yellow bin.
Batteries are highly recyclable but are dangerous when placed in our bins. Drop them off for free at one of many convenient collection points around our community.
There are some recyclable items that don’t belong in our bins. Household problem waste such as paint, gas bottles, fire extinguishers, fluorescent globes and tubes, household and car batteries, smoke detectors and motor oils can be dropped off for free so that they don’t end up in landfill, and can be recycled into resources again.
Avoid needing to recycle in the first place by switching from single use to a reusable coffee cup. Forgot your cup? You can drop off your disposable cup at a Simply Cup recycling collection point.
Use services like TerraCycle or visit Hastings Enviro Zero Waste stall at the Foreshore Markets for a wide range of recyclable items that can’t go in our Yellow Bin.
Purchase products made from recycled materials to support the recycling process.
Whichever path you choose, we are asking you to make it official – enter your pledge into the draw to win from a prize pool valued at over $500 of locally purchased recycled products.
Competition has now closed and our lucky prize winners have been notified:
First place – Chloe Griffiths
Second place – Karen Hunt
Third place – Frances Styles
Congratulations to our winners and thankyou to everyone who lodged their pledge this National Recycling Week!
