Beyond the Bin Tour – Waste and recycling in our region

Discover what happens to your waste and recycling behind the scenes.

Join us for a free guided bus tour of the Kingfisher and Cairncross Waste Facilities to see how general waste, recycling and organics are managed across the Port Macquarie Hastings region.

During the tour, you’ll visit key sites, learn about landfill management, organics processing and material recovery, and hear directly from our expert team. A short presentation and Q&A session will follow at our education space beside the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF).

Age Requirements

Children must be at least 6 years old and accompanied by a parent or carer aged 18+. Adults are responsible for supervising children at all times.

Tour itinerary:

• 8:45am Check in and depart from outside Players Theatre (33 Lord St, Port Macquarie)
• 9:15am Second pick up outside chemist, Sovereign Hills (15 Chancellors Dr, Thrumster)
• 9:30am Drive through Kingfisher Waste Transfer station
• 10:00am Bus tour of Cairncross Facility with expert guide
• 10:30am Waste presentation
• 11:15am Q& A
• 11:35am Bus departs Cairncross
• 12:00pm Return

What to Bring

Cairncross Waste Facility is an operational site. Please wear closed, comfortable shoes and bring any drinks or snacks you may need.

Tour Terms and Conditions

By registering for our free tour, you understand and agree to the following:

• Buses will depart promptly, according to schedule and will therefore not be able to accommodate late arrival
• Seatbelts must be worn at all times while onboard the bus
• Visitors must have good mobility for climbing stairs and walking within the grounds
• Appropriate clothing and closed in footwear is required
• Adequate sun protection such as a hat and sunscreen, and insect protection is recommended
• While onsite at any operational facility, you must stay with the tour facilitator or other designated Port Macquarie-Hastings Council staff member at all times
• Port Macquarie-Hastings Council reserves the right to:
  – cancel a booked tour. If this is necessary, we will do all that is reasonable to provide as much notice as possible
  – ask individuals or groups to leave the site immediately if any action or behaviour is deemed unsafe.
• Visitors are asked to strictly follow the onsite safety rules
• Visitors must refrain from touching any machinery or equipment – there are physical and chemical hazards within the plant
• Smoking is not permitted on site at our operational facilities

Bookings

Places are limited to 20, and bookings are essential.
After registering, you’ll receive a confirmation email and a reminder 24 hours before the tour.
