Workshops & Excursions

Our Schools Education Programs

Port Macquarie-Hastings Council’s free school programs are developed by qualified educators and designed to empower our children and youth with localised knowledge and skills that support them in becoming responsible and sustainably-minded active citizens in our local community.

We offer a range of hands-on incursions and excursions across waste management and water conservation topics. We also provide project-based learning opportunities for local schools throughout the year. We aim to provide deeper learning across our standard program and foster 21st-century skills such as creativity, critical thinking, teamwork, and communication.

Waste Education

Learning what goes in which bin can be a little tricky. This interactive workshop brings our A-Z Waste guide to life, helping our young ones become Which Bin Experts so they can not only get their own rubbish into the right bin but even help others get waste sorted! Students will explore a range of waste items, learn why waste separation is important, and engage in fun sorting activities that re-enforce correct use of household bins and items that can be dropped off for free through our waste facilities.

Water Education

Water is a precious natural resource and even when it seems like we have so much of it, it’s important we all play our part to ensure we have enough drinking water for the future. In this fun and interactive workshop, students will participate in practical experiments to uncover how much potable water we use in common daily activities, then explore the ways they, their families and their school can reduce their use to become water saving legends.

Suitable for Early Childhood – Upper Primary

Our unique coastal landscape means that our dams and catchment processes also quite unique. On this guided tour and interactive onsite workshop, students will visit our Cowarra Off Creek Storage Dam to understand how we collect, store and distribute potable water in our community. In addition to learning about water storage, use, and conservation, students will also have the opportunity to engage with the Aboriginal sculptures at the Dam, learning about the importance of water to the community and the involvement of the Bunyah Local Aboriginal Land Council in the approval and construction of the Cowarra Dam.

Can be tailored to suit all age groups.

Our online learning hub, ConnectEd Kids, brings learning to your classroom in a fun and interactive virtual environment! Our first module of our Waste Warriors program is now live and our Water Wise modules are due for release soon.
