Native Plant of the Month: Banana Bush

The botanical name, Tabernaemontana pandacaqui, is a bit of a mouthful, so this local native is more commonly referred to as Banana bush.

Banana Bush is an attractive shrub, up to 3 metres tall. It grows naturally in moist eucalypt forest and on the edge of rainforest.  It has glossy, dark green foliage and small, fragrant, white flowers in Spring to early Summer, the flowers somewhat resembling helicopter blades. After flowering, small, bright orange banana-like fruits develop (which are poisonous to humans). It prefers rich, well-drained soil in part shade. It is an excellent container plant and responds well to trimming.
