3. Why Sort Waste?

Why Sorting Your Waste Matters

Sorting our waste properly helps protect our environment and makes our community a better place to live. Tap or click the boxes below to find out how!

Less to landfill

When we recycle and compost, we send less waste to landfill. This helps reduce greenhouse gases that harm our planet.

Protects wildlife

When we sort waste correctly, we stop harmful items from ending up in nature. This keeps animals safe and their homes clean.

Reduces pollution

Sorting keeps rubbish out of our oceans, rivers and parks. It also stops harmful chemicals from polluting our soil, air and water.

Saves precious resources

Recycling gives materials a new life, which means we don’t have to use as many new resources. This saves energy and protects nature

Our Household Bins

We use bins with different colors to sort our waste. The red bin is for general waste that can’t be recycled or composted, the yellow bin is for recycling, and some homes have a green bin for food and garden waste.

When out and about in our community, you’ll also find red and yellow bins.

There are some things, like batteries, that can’t go in any of our bins. We’ll explain that later in the module.

Can you match each bin to its purpose?
